“Misery Loves Comedy”; and You Will Love This Doc

Misery Loves Comedy

Misery Loves Comedy

Do you have to be miserable to be funny?  This and many other intimate details of being a comedian are just a few of the topics that Kevin Pollak (Director) and a bevy of the world’s funniest people address in this new documentary about being a comedian.

Comedian docs have been popping up here and there for a while now, and what’s interesting is they all have their unique moments that take us one step closer to understanding  “Just why do people choose to do this?!”  To hear about stand up comedy and being funny in general from so many actors was a refreshing perspective.

The unabashed honesty leads to some deeply personal and dark moments from Martin Short having a breakdown while on his way to have lunch with Bill Murray; to Maria Bamford looking back to her time in a psych ward.   The pain and darkness of comedy certainly can be seen as misery – and seems to be a creative catalyst for what we come to find as humor.  Is it a coincidence some of music’s finest masterpieces were created at low points (break ups, drug addictions, loss)  I think not.

Pearl Jam Fall Tour Kicks Off With 3 Hour+ Epic in Cincy

Eddie Vedder, Cincinnati 2014

Eddie Vedder, Cincinnati 2014

Pearl Jam returned to the stage last night in Cincinnati after touring the summer in Europe, and boy – did they come ready to play.  The bar has been set high – last night clocked in at just over 3 hours and was filled with a 34 song setlist that has fans all over wishing they were in Cincy last night.

The show started in usual Lightning Bolt Tour fashion with “Pendulum”, a haunting tune that has earned its place as a classic opener.  “Nothingman” quickly followed with the arena singing along word for word.   After that,  the feedback and wails of Mike McrCready’s guitar led the band into “Of The Girl”  off  Riot Act – and that’s when we knew we were in for a treat, Cincy was going to be special.

Heavy doses of rock followed including “Mind Your Manners”, “Corduroy” and a dedication to WKRP with “Spin the Black Circle”.  The boys were feeling good, Eddie sounded spot on and the show was kicked into high gear.  No matter how often they tour it’s always amazing and delightful to see these guys perform at such a high level night after night; and of course the  Eddie banter was hilarious,  talks off old shows and bogarted joints always make for a unique show experience.

The 20 song main set was rounded out by  personal favorites like “Love Boat Captain” – (with a new intro, and a “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” tag on the outro), a rollicking “State of Love and Trust” and a thumping version of “Present Tense”.  A cover of The Rolling Stones “Waiting on a Friend” as a nice surprise,  but the true nuggets came on the encores.

The light shuffle of “Sleeping By Myself” started the first encore with Eddie on uke, and the band all sitting down beneath the warm glow of the light globes dangling from the ceiling.  “Man of the Hour”  followed with a dedication to Pete Rose and his son – “an injustice” that he is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame according to Eddie – agreed!  When the band quickly dove into  not often played cuts  like  “Parachutes”, and “All Those Yesterdays” there was no doubt the night was far from over and that they were digging deep.

Most interesting (and fun)  was that the encore contained songs that usually find their way to the start or middle of the show  (Given to Fly, Evolution) yet by having them on the encore gave them a new light and in the case of “Betterman” – longer jams.  My friend asked for some “angry” Eddie on this tour and got a little taste last night…   As (B M) ended Eddie went into the usual  “Save it for Later” tag before really thrashing away with full on Townsend worthy windmills, breaking all the strings on his SG guitar…which then led to him completely smashing his axe in true rock glory.

Even before the windmills, we knew The Who were on the bands mind – this very arena was the setting for tragedy 34 years ago after a Who concert ended when 11 fans died.  Eddie spoke of how the band helped Pearl Jam when they went through similar circumstances of their own – they then tore into a blistering version of “The Real Me” – the last song The Who played that sad night in Cincinnati so many years ago.  You have to know that Eddie knows this as he meticulously crafts the setlist each night.

The night ended with a blow out of anthems that included “Alive”  and “Yellow Ledbetter” with the house lights up – tambourines flying, and everyone (including me) with smiles from ear to ear…there is no slowing them down – this short Fall Tour is a must see – get to a show, and if you can’t – yes Sue Duddy – you should use your 10c download to get this bootleg the day it come out!

We Got This – 2 Years w/ Boo & Many More to Come

We Got This

We Got This

Two years ago today… I married the love of my life, it was the best day ever.

We have been together for just over 4 years and through good times and bad often told each other “WE GOT THIS”.  It became our mantra, our motto, so much so we had it inscribed on the inside of our rings.   Here we are today, back in Little Rock, AR visiting and celebrating two years, and we STILL got this.

  • It means I love you when you are having a rough day and need someone to vent to and just get all of your  frustrations out…I am here for you.
  • It means even when I am out-of-town and work is busy, that you support me and know that we will get by, and that the best part will be when I  get home and we are together just relaxing.
  • It means trusting each other that we will always do the best thing for each other ~ including move around the country TWICE  (I Love You Steph).
  • It means going along for the ride – even if we are unsure where we are going…but the best part is that where ever we end up, we will be together.
  • It means no matter what life puts in front of us, through the ups and downs, we will make it.   We will be tested – but we will survive, because we are committed to each other and love one and other until the end.

Tonight we are having dinner at the fabulous Capital Hotel…where we danced the night away and shared an amazing wedding weekend with our family and friends – I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Happy 2 year Anniversary to Stephanie…My Everything – I can’t wait to see what’s next!

1.) Failure – Fantastic Planet It’s sad to me that more people don’t know who Failure is….back from the ashes and touring pretty much all over,  these guys have defined what most view as alternative music….Bands like Tool and Foo Fighters would not exist without some influence from Failure.  Check out this record…my fave; and if they are in your town this summer – they are a must see for any rock fan.

2.) The Black Keys – Turn Blue These 2 just can’t stop.  Another batch of awesome and VERY unique songs.  The opening track Weight of Love is a slow burning six and a half-minute track that combines Pink Floydish vibe with guitar solos ala Maggot Brain – check it out.  Bullet in the Brain, Fever, and Turn Blue  round out another great record from Akron’s finest.

3.) Neil Young – A Letter Home –  The most stripped down music experience from an artist in decades.   Uncle Neil recorded this batch of songs at Third Man Records (Jack White’s Nashville Studio) in a 1947 Voice-o-Graph booth (the only working one in the world).  All the tracks are tender cuts from artists like Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Springsteen, amongst other gems.  It literally sounds like listening to a record on an old Victrola back in the 40’s.   The vinyl version is out, and wonderful – digital and expanded versions coming soon – true music lovers only.

4.) The Cold and Lovely – Ellis Bell (EP) –  TC&L  are a pleasant surprise –  one can only hope they continue to make more music and find themselves touring the country.   Their latest EP  brings you back to the 90’s  when women led  rock bands like Garbage and Veruca Salt made alternative rock a little sexier.  I hate to make comparisons to other bands but they channel so many of my favorite from the above mentioned to Silversun Pickups  to atmospheric guitar riffs ala U2.   Doll,  and the pristine Red Eye are stand outs.
ANT SAYS: 3 out of 4 ANTS – You have been looking for a band like this…trust me.  Faith in music restored.

5.) Coldplay – Ghost Stories – Sometimes, I just don’t  want to like these guys, but it’s really hard to not to….  Their latest sounds like Chris Martin’s haunted inner psychosis put to music in the most minimalist Coldplay effort ever.  If they tour off this album – which I am sure they will;  they should play  smaller cozier rooms so you can feel the emotions of these songs  tear and bleed at the seams.    Magic  their first single is perhaps the only glimpse of an upbeat track in the short set.   Tracks like Midnight, Always in My Head, and Oceans  are beautifully sad leaving deep imprints of a love lost.  multiple Versions Available – Deluxe Version @ Target.

Itunes, Apple TV – Your Answer To Watching Oscar Winners

Apple TV

Apple TV

You don’t have Apple TV?  Awww…that’t too bad, you really should. The Oscars are over, the winners are celebrating, and the best part is – you could be watching these wonderful films all from the comfort of your home.   Apple TV is not new, the first generation hit the market in 2007, but boy has its capabilities blossomed  since then.  Here are the basics to this $99 (one time cost) gem:

  • Think of it as a means to access anything from Itunes  – on your TV – Watch movies, listen to music as examples
  • It’s a conduit for many apps – Netflix, HuluPlus, HBOGO
  • Sick of huddling in front of the computer to stream a concert off YouTube? Watch it on your TV just like any other show
  • Sports, Sports, and More Sports – The Watch ESPN app allows you to stream all those ESPN3 and ESPNU games you can’t seem to fnd on Cable
  • Even More Sports!? – Yes.  NHL Game Center allows you to watch any NHL Game,  The NBA, MLB, and MLS are on board too * Extra subscription Required

For me, I access Netflix, HuluPlus, and Itunes movies more than anything.   Movies are pre-released to Itunes many times before they hit the theater, some are released to Itunes before they hit RedBox or Cable – if you are into seeing great films whenever you want – it’s a very convenient option.

Check out some of the Oscar’s finest available now:

1.) 12 Years a Slave –   Winner for Best Picture and well deserved.  Steve McQueen directs this compelling and often hard to watch film about a man once free who is later sold int to slavery.  Epic performances from all – a must watch film; but gear up it’s intense and often sad.

Nebraska = Somber, Strange, Sweet – Silver Screen Delight

Nebraska

Nebraska

When I first saw the trailer for this one… I thought; I want to see this one.  Will Forte in a dramatic yet mildly funny film directed by Alexander Payne (The Descendants) – this will be good.  It is.  It’s more than good.  It’s  strangely  funny, somber, and sweet all rolled up into one.

Bruce Dern is Woody Grant an aging  war vet who believes he has just won a million dollars – he got a letter in the mail (magazine subscription) good enough right?!  Will Forte is  David his son who is muttling through life as a stereo system salesmen whose girlfriend just left him.  Together they don’t have much; as  Woody seems to have been lost inside a bottle of whiskey for most of his kids upbringing – yet  David knows his father is at the end of his life journey and struggling – and it’s not easy to just be a passenger riding along watching the trip end.

After multiple attempts by Woody to walk his way to Omaha, NE to claim his million, David finally agrees to take him. The road trip has its ups and downs the biggest being the stop in Woody’s hometown where they get hung up by old  friends and family  claiming that of course – Woody owes them.  He was a good man, but when times were tough the town helped him ( so they say) .  The worst of the bunch is his former work partner played by Stacy Keach – he’s slimy and deceiving as ever.

A brilliant performance from Bruce Dern is matched by the hilariously sweet and often vulgar  June Squibb who plays Kate Grant – his wife. When she’s not bragging about all the men that wanted to get in her pants she’s being oblivious with her sons, or yelling at her husband for ordering meatloaf when it’s not on the menu.  Her Oscar Nom is well deserved.

By the end of this wonderfully touching film I was beaming with smiles and almost at tears – Enjoy this true gem.

3.) Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks – Wig Out at Jag Bags  It just never gets old to me.  Malkmus + The Jicks are not Pavement but his classic indie rock guitar riffs  and unmistakable lyrics make this record addictive.  “Cinnamon and Lesbians” blends Pavement with Steely Dan and it’s awesome.  Off beat hilariously genius lyrics like We were raised on Tennyson and venison and the Grateful Dead, make songs like “Lariat” the type you want to spin over and over.  Well done SM.

4.) Broken Bells – After The Disco It’s so cliché to say but this record is tight.  The Shin’s James Mercer and Brian Burton (aka: Danger Mouse) have the juices flowin’  – the mojo is workin’ on their 2nd effort.   After The Disco  mixes  sounds of The Shins with The Bee Gees and Steely Dan for a tasty little pop treat. So many times the single doesn’t live up to the hype but this time – it does.  “Holding on for Life” is a homage to The Bee Gee’s whether they admit it our not and it’s brilliant.  The rest of the album lives up to the hype.

5.) Band of Horses – Acoustic at the Ryman I love this band and I always will.  They have changed so much yet continue to stay the same through all the hullabaloo everyone makes about them.  This album is a no brainer – it’s  Ben Bridwell + band stripped down to their finest beauty.  The track list is impeccable – from “Marry Me” to “The Funeral” the band captures the most tender moments live at country music’s church.   My only gripe is that it’s over all too soon….
